I started my career as a chemical laboratory technician with a mining company for almost 11 years since April of 2007 until November of 2017, my then colleagues would still come to me for counselling. My then colleagues came to me for counselling because I am generally a warm person, and they knew that I could keep their matters in confidence. Our laboratory was planned in such a way that every worker would do analysis in their own room and then bring the analysis results to the shift supervisor. The privacy of working then, in my own room, made it possible for me to offer counselling to my then fellow colleagues. I was also chosen as someone who was a leader among the women at the laboratory and for also doing some conflict resolution among the women, so I actually was chosen as a peace maker among the women. I was also chosen as a safety representative in the laboratory, so I had to make sure that everyone was safe while working. I believe that I was chosen because I genuinely care about the well-being of other people. I then realised that my real passion and calling was helping others through counselling. I trained a lot of my fellow colleagues to do some chemical analysis, which made me also realise that I had a lot of patience, which is one of the very important qualities to have as a specialist wellness counsellor, which is of course apart from having other qualities as well as, having a good listening ear, having empathy for people, caring about others, having a non-judgemental attitude and so forth. I then, started my BA degree in psychology studies while working as a laboratory technician. It was not easy because the two were totally different. Imagine having to do some chemical analysis then going to study psychology, but I persevered because I am a hard worker.
