https://headroom.co.za/user/dr-lydia-dekker/ As a psychosocial counsellor, I take a holistic approach to each client’s well-being. Beyond addressing immediate stressors or challenges, I consider the broader context in which these experiences occur, including emotional, social, relational, and personal circumstances. My sessions are client-centred, with the approach adapted to each individual’s needs, goals, and concerns. Depending on what is needed, sessions may include practical guidance, emotional support, and direction, while also focusing on developing healthy coping strategies, resilience, self-awareness, and a deeper understanding of underlying concerns. I believe therapy is a process, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach. The duration and intensity of counselling therefore vary according to each client’s circumstances, needs, and goals. My aim is to provide a safe, respectful, and supportive space where clients can gain insight, develop practical tools, navigate challenges, and work towards meaningful, sustainable, and positive change.
“ Your story is still being written. Healing begins when you give yourself permission to be seen, heard, and understood — just as you are.

I am a Specialist Wellness Counsellor with over 20 years of counselling experience, grounded in academic training in psychology and sociology and enriched by extensive life experience. This combination enables me to offer compassionate, informed mental health support to individuals experiencing a wide range of emotional and life challenges. I am dedicated to creating a safe, respectful, and non-judgmental space where clients can openly explore difficult circumstances and experiences. My role is to support and guide you through challenging life events while helping you develop greater insight, practical coping strategies, and resilience. I work with clients from diverse backgrounds, including different cultural, religious, and LGBTQIA+ communities. My approach is client-centred, recognising that every individual is unique and that counselling should be shaped around their specific needs, circumstances, and goals. At times, experiences such as anxiety, depression, or thoughts of self-harm may be connected to deeper emotional experiences or unresolved circumstances. Counselling can provide an opportunity to explore what may be underlying these difficulties, develop healthier ways of coping, and work towards meaningful change. My practice supports clients experiencing a range of life circumstances, including: Trauma responses related to gender-based violence and experiences of crime Grief and bereavement Relationship, marriage, couples, and pre-marriage counselling Family dynamics and interpersonal challenges Emotional support for individuals and families navigating a cancer diagnosis and treatment Emotional and mental health support for individuals and families facing end-of-life circumstances I believe that you are more than your circumstances, your struggles, or the labels that others may place upon you. Counselling is a journey of understanding, healing, and reconnecting with yourself, and I am committed to providing a supportive space where that journey can begin. ‹‹‹
